Het Beekman Hotel is een prachtig gerestaureerd monument van rode baksteen in het hart van Lower Manhattan. Sterker nog, als lid van World of Hyatt betekent een verblijf hier dat ik meer heb dan ik kan uitgeven aan een financieel rampzalige campagne om de ladder van het aantrekkelijke loyaliteitsprogramma van Hyatt te beklimmen. Ik probeer meestal high-end Hyatt-hotels te boeken met punten (meestal overgedragen van Chase), maar ik raakte bijna op en besloot dat het niet verstandig zou zijn om 25.000 punten per nacht uit te geven aan een veel kleinere kamer.
Hotéis en Lage des Beekman

De hoofdingang aan de Nassaustraat 123 is bedekt met een bruine luifel die van een afstand moeilijk te zien was door wat zogenaamd een geïmproviseerde steiger was en waarvan ik zeker weet dat die er stond toen ik er drie jaar geleden was.
lobby en registratie
Bij aankomst liep ik door de voordeur naar een slecht verlichte foyer waarvan de ontwerpers geïnspireerd leken te zijn door de Addams Family-woonkamer. Donkerhouten lambrisering, fluwelen banken en fauteuils, sierlijke kroonluchters, mozaïekvloeren, vintage portretten en antiek, en een receptie bedekt met wat lijkt op een groot Perzisch tapijt geven de plek een nogal spookachtige sfeer. .
Ik ging naar de receptie en kreeg te horen dat mijn superior kamer was opgewaardeerd naar een junior suite dankzij mijn Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts-voordelen. De receptionist liet me ook weten dat ik een tegoed van $ 100 voor eten en drinken en een late check-out van 16.00 uur ontving. Over het algemeen duurde het inchecken ongeveer 10 minuten.
Junior suite
Ik kreeg kamer 811 toegewezen, die volgens NYC-normen alleen als een suite zou worden aangemerkt. In het midden van de kamer staat een zeer comfortabel kingsize bed met een lederen hoofdbord en een kleine fluwelen bank aan het voeteneind.
Twee grote ramen kijken uit op het bed. Tussen de ramen staat een tv op een gammel dressoir, met links een klein bureau en een stoel.
Aan de rechterkant van de kamer, tegenover de deur, staan een grote houten ladekast, een blauwfluwelen bank en een kleine ronde tafel.
Rechts van de bank staat een moderne metalen barwagen met spiegelende bovenkant die snacks en drankjes verkoopt.
De badkamer bevindt zich links van de deur en is naar mijn mening het mooiste deel van de kamer. Het heeft wastafels voor hem en haar in een marmeren, houten en chromen ijdelheid, waarachter twee ronde spiegels zijn.
Vloeren zijn bedekt met zeshoekige marmeren tegels en rechthoekige marmeren tegels vormen een backsplash die halverwege de muur loopt.
De badkamer is gevuld met zachte handdoeken en badjassen, evenals toiletartikelen van CO Bigelow, waaronder shampoo, conditioner, douchegel, zeep en vochtinbrengende crème.
De regendouche is volledig betegeld met marmer en heeft naast de hoofddouche ook een handdouchekop.
Problemen
Twee dingen hadden invloed op mijn verblijf. De eerste was vooral een kwestie van smaak: de ruimte combineert een decadente Victoriaanse esthetiek met een minimalisme waardoor de ruimte koud aanvoelt. Het is zeer spaarzaam ingericht en de muren zijn erg kaal. Afgezien van de badkamer voelt het minder als een luxe hotelkamer en meer als de gestoffeerde woonkamer van een pas overleden oma.
Het tweede probleem was groter: de ramen in de kamer waren praktisch niet geluiddicht. Ik ben een zware slaper, dus dit zou geen groot probleem zijn geweest als er niet gebouwd was in het naastgelegen gebouw, dat elke ochtend rond 06.30 uur van mijn verblijf begon.
Het was zo erg dat ik vroeg om van kamer te veranderen, wat betekende dat ik moest verhuizen naar een kamer die ongeveer half zo groot was en een queensize bed had in plaats van een kingsize bed.
Het enige raam van de kamer keek uit op het interieur van het hotel, wat helaas betekende dat er heel weinig natuurlijk licht binnenkwam en gelukkig was het een veel, veel rustigere nacht. Het was prima voor de nacht, maar eerlijk gezegd een beetje deprimerend, en minder dan wat ik had verwacht voor $ 450 per nacht, zelfs in het centrum van Manhattan.
Academia doet Hotel Beekman
De Beekman bevat een gymzaal van twee verdiepingen, wat betekent dat deze toegankelijk is via deuren op de tweede of derde verdieping. Het lagere niveau bevat cardioapparatuur, waaronder loopbanden, crosstrainers, een trapmeester en twee pelotons.
Het bovenste niveau is voorzien van losse gewichten en machines, waaronder een legpress, lat pulldown en Smith-machine. Hoewel het hotel vol was, was de sportschool zelden vol, ongeacht het tijdstip van de dag.
Een sala do bar geen Temple Court
Het hotel is gecentreerd rond de Bar Room, een atrium dat negen verdiepingen door het hotel loopt en wordt bekroond door een piramidevormig dakraam.
De barruimte is ingericht in dezelfde verbleekte Victoriaanse stijl als de lobby en lijkt veel op een filmset van Guillermo del Toro. Fluwelen banken en barkrukken, donkerhouten tafels, ouderwetse gloeilampen, verroeste spiegels en een gietijzeren bar maken dit een van de mooiere ruimtes waar ik het geluk heb gehad om een drankje te bestellen.
Omdat ik dit verblijf via het American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts-programma heb geboekt, kreeg ik elke ochtend van mijn verblijf in de Bar Room ontbijt voor twee (tot $ 60). Ik heb genoten van het eten: hoewel relatief fantasieloos en duur, waren de gerookte witvis Benedictus en gerookte zalm toasties die ik had heerlijk. Helaas vergat ik in mijn waanzin voor de koffie foto's te maken van beide gerechten.
Restaurant Temple Court
Grenzend aan de Bar Room is Temple Court, een van de twee lunch- en dinerrestaurants van Beekman. Het Fine Hotels + Resorts-programma gaf me $ 100 om aan het onroerend goed te besteden, en aangezien het nieuwe Daniel Boulud-restaurant van het hotel, Le Gratin, van het aanbod was uitgesloten, at ik in Temple Court op de avond dat ik aankwam.
